Patriot Act Two

On the second anniversary of the dreadful and deadly terrorist attack of Sept. 11, 2001 America and Americans will never be the same. We all must remember that we are special people. People who enjoy life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. This has been our motto for over 200 years. However, the current administration in the White House is trying to change all of this. The residents of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue want to rewrite American history. President George W. Bush and his cabinet are using the event of 9/11 to push the restriction of American Civil Liberties and Foreign Nationals Civil Rights.

The United States Attorney General John Ashcroft is currently on a 15 state 21-city tour trying making an attempt to promote the Bush Administration's Patriot Act Two, which is also known as the Victory Act. This writer has another name for it. Mr. Ashcroft is trying to persuade Americans that this bill is right for America and that Americans should not fear losing their civil rights. WRONG

The Congress and Senate passed Patriot ONE soon after the World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks, because they feared for the country's safety and wanted to have safe guards in place. The vote for this bill was a landslide in both houses. The American voter now questions weather the legislators really read the complete version of this bill. We wonder if they knew what they were signing?

This Patriot ONE allows the government to arrest and detain many Arab Americans without an arrest warrant or any criminal charge filed against them. This act allows the government to misuse their authority by not allowing the accused to obtain an attorney legal representation for months. This is a basic American Civil Right. Many people in military jails were never charged with a crime and could not leave the makeshift barracks in Cuba for almost two years. This is permissible only in a time of war can this happen America has not declared war.

Remember the late sixties and early seventies when the same political message was sent. African Americans were a threat to this country. The State of California and the Federal government arrested many members of the Oakland Black Panther Party on conspiracy charges. Those charges have not yet been proven.

The question now is: are we trading our Constitutional Rights, our BILL OF RIGHTS for National security? If we are, we should ask ourselves: is it really worth it? The First Patriot Act invoked the following

1) Allowed the Government to secretly search homes and offices 2) Permits the FBI, CIA, or any other law enforcement agency to read your library and Internet records without your knowledge. 3) Broadens the definition of "Domestic terrorism" to include everyday activist like any American participating in any political protest.

Patriot ONE mostly involved foreign nationals, and Arab Americans, in other words, people of color.

Patriot Two alters these legal rights 1) Freedom of Association: The Government may monitor religious and political institutions without suspecting criminal activity to assist in an investigation. 2) Freedom of information: - The Government has closed public immigration hearings, has secretly detained hundreds of people without charges, and has encouraged bureaucrats to resist public records request. 3) Freedom of Speech: -The Government may prosecute librarians or keepers of any records if they tell anyone that the government subpoenaed information related to a terror investigation. 4) Right to Legal Representation: The Government may monitor federal prison "jailhouse conversations" between attorneys and clients, and deny lawyers to Americans accused of crimes. 5) Freedom from Unreasonable Searches: The Government may search and seize Americans' papers and effects without probable cause to assist terror investigations. 6) Right to a Speedy and Public Trial: The Government may jail Americans indefinitely without trial. 7) Right to Liberty: Americans may be jailed without being charged or being able to confront witnesses against them. Patriot TWO is directed at Americans especially those who are sympathetic to the Middle East. Patriot TWO is in direct conflict with the BILL OF RIGHTS. "Freedom, Justice, and the American Way" as the old Superman TV show would state is the reason why so many come to our land. Patriot TWO would snuff out this wonderful American dream. Patriot Two goes against everything we have been taught in school.

The American people are beginning to speak out against Patriot-TWO as of the date of writing this article one hundred and sixty communities have voiced their opposition to this act. Including three states and the cities of Oakland, Berkeley, Santa Cruz, and Sabastapol, California. All of these cities and states are currently writing resolutions to fight Attorney General Ashcroft. All of these cities and states plan to defy Patriot TWO if necessary. They are responding to this Patriot TWO by writing resolutions in an effort to deter and diminish the impact of Attorney General Ashcroft's crusade.

Republican Senator Murkowski, from Arkansas and Democratic Senator Wyden, from Oregon are introducing a bipartisan bill called "Protecting the Rights of Individuals Act". This bill would curb the power of Patriot ONE and future Patriot TWO. Most This bill is on the Senate floor and most Senators and Congressperson are accepting this new bill. The battle is on.

Ashcroft is trying to soften the blow by going to these controversial states and cities, trying to convince the American people why our country needs Patriot Two.

Sorry Attorney General, it is not going to work. UN-holy alliances are being formed all over this great country, The American Civil Liberties Union- ACLU, Gun Owners of American (another arm of the National Rifle Association-NRA), The Green Party, The Libertarian Party, and American Mothers for Peace are all against Patriot TWO. These five groups have never agreed on anything but they have come together on this point, Patriot TWO cannot be American law.

Dear President Bush, we do not want to switch Civil Liberties for American Security. This is not a football, basketball, or baseball game. So stop playing with the minds of the American people.
