About Lovemore Mataire
Inside Africa

I am a senior political reporter for The Herald--a national daily newspaper based in Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe. I started working for this newspaper in 1997 after graduating from the Harare Polytechnic with a National Diploma in Mass Communication and Journalism. I started as a cadet, junior reporter, rising to a senior reporter, and I am now working on the political desk, covering Africa and the international arena.

Basically, I am a pan-Africanist who believes that only blacks can overcome the problems that confront them today--most of which are historical. Jews are united, Arabs are united, and Africans need also to be recognised as formidable force to be reckon with on the international arena. So the birth of the African Union was the first step towards affirming our humanhood.

Maybe the nature of my birth substantially shaped my well being and mindset. Both of my parents were liberation war fighters, and I was born at Chimio Refugee Camp in Mozambique during the struggle for the independence of Zimbabwe. My father is still alive but now maintains a low profile because he feels he has done his part. Unfortunately, my mother did not live long enough to see the birth of a country that she so gallantly fought for. She was killed during the war when I was barely a year old.

This is who I am. []
