After watching the three debates for the leadership of our California Bear Republic, this writer feels that our state could be in real serious trouble. Are we truly becoming an elitist society or state?

In a week or so, the State of California will be voting on a recall. A recall. Congressperson Darrell Issa fathered; because of his money, the Ventura County Congressman has turned this state upside down. He challenged the leadership of Davis and the Democratic Party, and he is challenging the very basic fundamentals of democracy, which is a challenge that many argue could shake the very foundations of the wonderful country.

This vote could change the history of America and how everybody in America views an elected official. Nobody will be safe in any elected office.

In Californian history there has been only two recalls, no other governor has been recalled since 1911 and after this California circus ends in October there may never be another recall for another 90 years. It is said that this recall will cost the residents of Californian millions of dollars. This is money that could be used to build new power plants, repair city streets and schools, repair and build senior citizens and disabled centers; money that could be used to feed the poor and homeless. In the recall debates only the candidates with money could participate in the program, which this writer thinks, is so unfair and is the biggest problem in the current American political process. The rich have taken over the political agenda, shutting out the average or poor person. In the last debate, remember, Californians saw millionaires Arianna Huffington (Independent) Arnold Schwarzenegger, not Gary Coleman. Many Californians listen to Cruz Bustamante (Democrat and current Lt. Gov. of Calif.) not Larry Flint. This process closes the door on the average campaigner. Nowadays, one has to have money to influence the people running for office. This is not what Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, and James Madison had in mind two hundred and fifty years ago.

Republican moderate and millionaire Arnold Schwarzenegger finally decided to show up at this final debate because the questions were given ahead of time. Schwarzenegger showed up because the TERMINATOR had his answers scripted for him.

What this writer witnessed in the last debate could be called trifling, even a disgrace to all who participated. All the candidates should be ashamed of themselves. This was a major case of disrespect by all of the candidates. All of the candidates had their own little political spiel and did not stick to the subject asked. Only Democrat Cruz Bustamante and Green Party representative Peter Camejo answered the questions correctly and with grace.

Lieutenant Governor Bustamante should have told the people of California what he would implement if he held the seat that Gray Davis has now. Cruz did not do this very well in the last two debates. So my question is why is he there? The answer is very simple: if the recall comes to fruition the Democratic voters have a choice.

Arnold and Arianna, on the other hand, had their own personal battle, which took away from the real issue, the leadership of the State of California. Schwarzenegger with his many sexist remarks and many one- liners, and Huffington with her anti-Bush, anti-Washington agenda were not helping Californian voters make a decision. Ms. Huffington was running for president not governor, and Mr. Schwarzenegger was auditioning for another movie. Neither of them stuck to the task at hand. Neither of them impressed me. Neither deserves to be our state leader.

The only legitimate Republican candidate Tom McClintock stood his ground with his conservative views. Anti-abortion, yes on Proposition 54 (the Ward Connelly's form of a color blinded society), limited tax program, and no on gun control. McClintock is a man for the office. I don't agree with some of his political positions, but he has the qualifications to fill the seat of governor.

The man who won the last two debates was not there, Governor Gray Davis. By not participating he did not look like a comedian on television in the last two debates. He won by default. These debates are a very sad commentary on the State of California and its leaders. So ladies and gentleman, you have a choice: you have the power to pick the next person to go to Sacramento and represent your views. VOTE!
