According to the New York Times, and other local; newspapers, Walter Hawkins, Gospel Singer, Died July 12, 2010, at 61 years old. Hawkins and his brother grew up in the Church of God In Christ in Berkeley California. He and his brother were Grammy-winning gospel composers. He became a minister of a church in Oakland. California .
It is reported that he died last Sunday at the home he shared with a brother and three sisters in Ripon, California The cause of his death is reported as pancreatic cancer, said Bill Carpenter, a spokesman for the Hawkins Family said.
"Oh Happy Day," became a well known anthem that sold
millions of copies and moved him out of the gospel category to other songs.
