Religion: A gateway to Understanding?

Isn't religion supposed to be like a gateway to higher understanding? If so, why do some people lose their minds behind it? Christianity, Islam, and Catholicism alike (some) are hypocrites, acting like they are holier than thou, yet they commit crime after crime, and sin after sin.

Remember Jim Jones was so devoted to his religion he became abnormal, and with that abnormality, he recruited many to follow him in the name of God, and slaughtered them; was that a belief in Christianity? And what about some of the ministers and deacons of today, robbing the congregations of their donations and buying real estate, homes, fine automobiles and jewelry, in the name of God? Oh, did I forget to mention they commit adultery--slaves to their own lust, desires, and a false sense of power?

Yet they are quick to recruit us to become believers in their journey--Osama bin Laden, Saddam, etc., Muslims and believers of Islam.

What is with the Middle East with all the hypocrisy that going? It is really unbelievable. I just don't get it. Here is a group of people rescued by the Prophet Muhammad, just like the followers of Moses were given life and an example to live by. And all the killing and suicidal terrorist attacks on human life are sad. These are extremists who proclaim Islam as their religion and kill innocent people next door, abroad, and in their own back yard for their own twisted interpretation of life's expectations.

Some of the children there are dying rapidly; poverty is their first name, while some of these poppy kings, oil kings and proclaimed nomads rule, passing on destruction and death to others. How in this world can they call themselves Islamic? Worst, how can those who claim they believe in Allah (to whom all praises are due) be followers and bow down to these people?

How about the catholic priests? It is a sad day when priests who are supposed to be on a passage to God (to whom all praises are due) take advantage of others by a false sense of power and molest children? But what makes it worst is when these sins are taken lightly and others are quick to forgive them and think treatment is the solution, taking the focus off victims--the children. They have the nerves to use filthy hands to hold the body and blood of Christ (a ritual practiced in this religion) and pass it out to the congregants.

Religion is lost in these people and all that is left are rituals--that are used as clout to be seen by man for good, while in the dark, sick side prevails. Where am I going with this? I see too much hypocrisy. How is it in 2002 people are going along with the status quo in religion and so-called leaders of these religions? Some of these sick, twisted people hide behind the words of God while oppressing, murdering, raping and molesting.

These are extremists whose minds have become distorted because they are caught between two fences, the carnal and the spiritual. Nobody is perfect, and it is evident that we are far from it. Those who claim a religion and commit crimes, misusing the word of God for their own twisted beliefs, are beyond forgiveness. Words like peace and love are tarnished. The word of God, no matter how many change the words, no matter how many ways it is misinterpreted, will not fall short of its meaning. It is up to each person to reach an understanding of its meaning. All the religions originated from one true religion and one God. But who can reverse the errors of history when Christians, Muslims and Catholics slaughtered many people due to ignorance and a sense of supremacy?

Isn't religion supposed to be like a gateway to a higher understanding of a Higher Power (God)? Do the acts of these people in power under these religions make you want to be a part of any one of them? If not, why do we let these people continue to hold positions of power in our religion? Can you really call yourself a true believers? Did God forgive Satan? Crimes and sins are a part of life because excuses are made for them, money is made from them, and fear keeps the mouth shut.
