Will You Reclaim Our Destiny?

Anna Libet

To what do we owe

This dance with life?

Is it decreed from on high

Or bellowed from down below

Or whispered on the wind

Like random seeds

Perhaps, it’s just the lot we’re dealt

To scrape and fight for everything

I hear history’s sad tune

As it hums and rolls ‘round and ‘round

Waiting for a soul to invite us

To save us

To write us

To play us

To expose us

To love us

Why couldn’t it be you?

While the music ends the steps for some

Beginning them for new

You’ve been courted many songs

But decline every time

The footsteps come too near

To take your hand

And dance around the room

Which is shaped just like the earth

Its boundaries soft and round

Do you think you’ll fall and break your neck?

Will it numb your feet?

Or make you deaf?

Do your greedy legs shake too long

To accommodate another’s future?

Maybe if you didn’t feel

So entrenched in your tenuous pursuits

Of having what you always want

Then you wouldn’t turn away

From the less fortunate, the unfortunate

As the light and music of the earth fades…

But not everyone has the luxury to fail

And like you they see

A trail that leads to nowhere,

As it continues to wind

Around the failure of your mind

To grasp its meaning.
