Former Governor Pete
Wilson:
He came up and went down again ___________ |

Last year former Governor of California came out of obscurity to see what public perception of him was now. He didn't like what he saw. In a number of speaking tours, Pete Wilson offered his advice on a number of political and financial issues. Even Republicans don't want to hear from Pete Wilson; he is the single Republican who did more harm to Republican aspirations in California than anyone else. Wilson campaigned for re-election in a way he knew the majority of Californians would respond--a scratched earth, racist policy that killed Republican hopes for Hispanic votes. If you are going to run in California, you need Hispanic votes. The Republicans, who will sometimes accept anyone willing to be a harsh conservative, recognized that their biggest loss of the Hispanic vote in California can be placed at the feet of Pete Wilson, governor of California. So a fter Wilson's infamous Proposition 187 Campaign and end of his governorship and ill-fated presidential campaign, he came up to caught some air and see if his political infamy had passed. It hasn't. He was assailed by his own party, as they distanced themselves from him, and made it clear that he is persona non grata. So we should see no more of Wilson for some time. But who told Wilson it was time for him to step back onto stage and claim a legacy other than his own? Wilson may think as H. L.Mencken does [people will buy any lie given enough times.] but Hispanics have a long political memory. If the Republicans want to kill all hopes of being a majority party or get their candidate for governor elected against a gray Davis, they have to keep quiet Pete Wilson, as they seem to have done.
