One Man's Approach To Virginia's Apology for Slavery
_________

To: All Americans who favor former slave-state governments and the Federal government offering apologies to African Americans for slavery.

I have extended thanks to Virginia legislators on behalf of African
Americans and other Americans who favor the action taken by the General Assembly offering an apology for the role Virginia had in slavery.
I have also contacted legislators of my native state of Alabama and urged them to follow the example of Virginia an offer legislation that would apologize for the role Alabama had in slavery.
Virginia was the first state to have slaves, when in 1619 Africans were enslaved in Jamestown (Virginia) and the state that on the eve of the Civil War had the highest number of slaves (490,198 (30.7 percent of her population) and Alabama was the state with the fourth highest number of slaves, 435.080 (45.1 percent of her population).
