Last Friday, Zimbabwe's High Court granted Morgan Tsvangirai, MDC leader, a record $10 million bail coupled with stringent conditions on the fresh charges of treason for allegedly calling for the violent removal of a constitutionally-elected Government led by President Mugabe. Tsvangirai, who was in police custody for 20 days, was granted bail in absentia as he attended another court where he faces similar charges for plotting to assassinate President Mugabe. Passing out her judgement, Justice Susan Mavangirai ordered the opposition leader to surrender to the Registrar of the High Court title deeds to immovable property worth $100 million. In the on-going trial where he is charged together with his party secretary-general, Welshman Ncube, and a legislator, Renson Gwasela, Tsvangirai deposited $1.5 million. In last Friday's ruling, the court barred the MDC leader from making inflammatory statements that advocate the removal of President Mugabe. He was also ordered not to incite his supporters to seek the removal of the President from office using violence or unconstitutional means. The judge also dismissed the State's refusal for bail as unfounded, saying she was not aware of case authority where a suspect applying for bail faced other charges previously preferred against him and for which he had not been convicted. "The State counsel's submissions are totally unfounded," she said. She granted Morgan Tsvangirai bail after 20 days in jail. []
