Laurence Russel Albert is one of the world s foremost bass-baritones, and is in the forefront of developing the next generation of young singers. He was the first African-American to represent the Mid-South region at the Metropolitan Opera National Auditions. With vocal artistry encompassing both bass-baritone and baritone repertoire, he has performed in over twenty countries. Mr. Albert s concert and operatic performances have been broadcast throughout Europe on both radio and television. He has sung world premieres of concert music and operas including Heinz Holliger s What, Where? with the Frankfurt Opera and the French premiere of Knot Garden by Sir Michael Tippett on a tour throughout France. He has been praised by critics for an impressive dramatic presence , a well-rounded instrument that imparts power and beauty and an amazing range of nuance. Laurence Russel Albert attended Morehouse College, the University of Michigan, the University of Tennessee, and the Saint Louis Conservatory of Music, where he studied voice under the tutelage of Edward Zambara. He has been accompanied frequently in recital by the pianist and French song specialist, Mary Dibbern. In addition to his career as a classical vocal soloist, between 1996 and 2002 Mr. Albert was the conductor and artistic director of the French choral group The Voice of Freedom.
