Last week, Henry Louis Gates announced he would not be going to Princeton University as many thought he would. A few months ago Harvard's most noted black professor, Dr. Cornel West resigned and took a position at Princeton along with another Harvard professor. That move nearly depleted Harvard of most of its high profile black scholars. Dr. West had gotten into a verbal battle with Harvard's President Summers over making a rap record and about West sitting as a member of Al Sharpton's exploratory committee to determine if Sharpton should run for the US Presidency. As a result of that dispute, West took a position with Princeton, which had been courting him for several years. Many spectulated that other high profile black scholars at Harvard would follow him. Only one did and others were eyeing Gates to see if he would join West. He decided against it and last week announced he would stay at Harvard. [] |
