What is America's Motive:
Some thoughts on the Elian Gonzalez Case

"I am suspicious about all the attention given to this case.  It is worthy of some attention, due to the emotional dramatization and the public interests, but how many people have you heard of trying to make it to America--thousands of people, for sure.  Yet, I am suspicious of the motive behind America’s new interest. "

David Bloom of NBC reported that in Miami, no state department officials would enforce a federal ruling to remove Elian Gonzalez, if it were to come to that.  Some people in Miami are practicing forming a human chain, as far as a six-mile radius, around the home, where young Elian lives.

I am suspicious about all the attention given to this case.  It is worthy of some attention, due to the emotional dramatization and the public interests, but how many people have you heard of trying to make it to America--thousands of people, for sure.  Yet, I am suspicious of the motive behind America’s new interest.

This is a sensitive case, but are the people so blind that they have forgotten that the father has a voice in this matter?  Can the State Department really say they would not carry out the law?  Isn’t this the same way people did when the amendment was passed that gave the women the rights to vote, when African Americans were given the rights to vote, when the civil rights bill was passed?  Maybe this type of conduct is nothing new, but what is America’s motive now?

In NY, Amadou Diallo was gunned down and   I did not see any human chains, vast marches or protests from anyone other than the African American community predominately.

Young Elian Gonzalez is being made to look as if he is a symbol of what America is about—the land of liberty, freedom and justice for all.  Need you be reminded of the purpose of the Statue of Liberty?  It was given to America because of the injustices, (i.e., people were suffering under oppression).  I am suspicious because, this nation has always had underlying motives. If this child were from Haiti, would the same emotions be expressed, would the United States still care?

African Americans, Asians, Filipinos, Irish, Jews, Mexicans, Native Indians, Pacific Islanders, Puerto Ricans, poor whites, and women have all been discriminated against throughout the history of America, but as we grow as a nation, on the surface it appears as though things are fine, but beneath the surface things are not at all well.

What does Elian Gonzalez represent to America? Is it liberty?  Then free all from bigotry, hatred, discrimination, and prejudice that exist today.  From the murder of Amadou Diallo, to the Confederate flag in South Carolina, to the Oscars, racial supremacy blatantly exists for all to see.  Is that America’s motive?  Are you using young Elian to promote your powerful might against Cuba?

People, in this land of all cultures have deep wounds that need to heal so we can grow and experience the words written in the constitution: "We the People….”

I am tired of the divided states of America; it is time to put it all on the plate.  It is time to make direct apologies to all so our nation can heal. []   Frank Williams
