A Day of Rage
At UC Berkeley

Thursday, March 8, starting at 10 AM, there will be a Day of Rage protest at the UC Berkeley campus. There will be teach-ins and protests because of affirmative action cutbacks.

Since UC discontinued affirmative action for ethnic minorities at Berkeley, there have been periodic Days of Rage on that historically troubled campus.

The committee sponsoring this Day of Rage was before the SF Unified School District soliciting their endorsement and support at a meeting last Tuesday night. The SFUSD Board agreed to endorse the Day of Rage at UC Berkeley.

One White speaker at the board meeting cited an incident where he and a Black driver got into an auto accident. When the White police officer came to the scene he wouldn't hear from the Black driver; he only wanted to hear from the White driver. This man recognized that this was standard operating procedure for too many police officers and many other officials of society. He also recognized that this White favoritism was discriminatory behavior toward Blacks.

He moved from this reality to see that White discrimination against ethnic minorities is, in fact, White affirmative action. He stated that to be the reason he was asking the SFUSD to endorse this Day of Rage and help restore affirmative action for ethnic minorities at UC, even as it had for itsWhite applicants. []
