A most interesting thing has happened to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. His wife called Anita Hill last week and asked her for an apology. That was a strange request of a sitting US Supreme Court justice, especially in the light of this Justice and Ms. Anita Hill‘s history. Mrs. Justice Thomas asked Ms. Hill to apologize to her for having accused Mr. Thomas of sexual harassment at his confirmation. Thomas is now confirmed and a sitting Justice for over 10 years.
Could it be that that the Thomases are having marital problems? Or could Justice Thomas is disenchanted with his position and is seeking a way off the court? Certainly, he could make more money on the speaking circuit that he makes as a Justice. The life term as a Justice is prestigious, but not as lucrative as some other pursuits.
It lacks decorum for Justice Thomas’ wife to call Anita Hill, of all women, seeking an apology after a decade. Being an intelligent woman, Ms. Hill contacted the FBI to alert them of this call. Ms. Hill responded that she was not going to apologize for the truth she testified to some years ago,
One can only imagine what is going on in the mind of Ms. Thomas to degrade her husband by such behavior. Her actions reignite the action all over again. Surely Mrs. Justice Thomas must have been aware that such an action would provoke inquiries into the well being of their marriage. It would be a dialogue frenzy to have the Thomeses divorcing in open court. The whole story of the Clarence Thomas affair certainly has not been told. F A number of years reports have been written of other allegation women have raised against Thomas before his confirmation.
During a decade Hill has maintained herself with the dignity that becomes a Professor of Law; there have been no scandals that has been reported of her. Now is only Mrs. Justice Thomas that has broken silence and added drama again into this case that will not die. And her actions only diminishes her husband‘s standing in the community and among his peers. But they also raise the question about Justice Thomas’s past truthfulness under oaths when he was confirmed.
It may be that after all these years of maintaining a silence about the veracity of his truth under oath during his confirmation hearing his wife is prodding him for the truth she may not now believe he has shared with her. After a while wives have general sense about when a husband is confiding in her and when he is not. It is clear that something is troubling Mrs. Thomas that she wants an answer to. Poor Clarence Thomas; he can not claim that a lynching is Tran springing now. But his confirmation will seemingly never end. What would happen if Thomas or his wife in some twist of fate would admit that he did lie in his confirmation testimony? We can see that there will be calls for his impeachment from the court. But suppose Mrs. Thomas files for divorce, claiming he lied under oath and still looks at pornography? That was part of the claim raised against him. Not wanting a nasty divorce, Thomas would probably resign from the court and make large sums of money on the lecture circuit.
It is unlikely that Thomas and his wife have conceived a plot to assess what he/they would be worth financially on the open market, Whether this is possible or not, in a few months the press will begin to ask questions, and Fox news will quietly make offers to see if they can incorporate another high-ranking Black to go along side of Juan Williams and the few other Black faces they would have come next presidential campaign season.[]
