Bush Veto New Hate Crime Bill |
||||||
|
Remember, Bush as Governor of Texas didn't want to talk about the James Bryd's Case. Since this man high jacked the presidency for the second time, our country has been at war not only aboard but at home. Although we have Homeland Security, all kinds of State, City, County police with the growing INS and Minute Men it has not made our society gentler; matter-of-fact we have become more violent since George Bush took office. Last year Florida had three (or more) violent attacks on individuals who were homeless; in California a White racist group attacked and beat a Black man who uses a wheelchair and a Latina trans-woman was found dead in March. All of these cases and more like them tell us that certain groups hate people who are disabled, gay, transvestites and homeless. There needs to be in hate-crime legislation against such violence. However, Bush thinks it is unnecessary. One newspaper article out of Texas says the bill leaves groups out like the police! Does that make sense? Examine the definition of hate crimes and you’ll see why police are not included! If we had a President that read newspapers and connected to the public we wouldn’t need to waste time answering why this legislation is needed. The other thought of Bush and the Republicans (and some Democrats) is that this law creates a special class. Once again the blame is on the victim. The perpetrators target certain people like the ones I mentioned above. The outrageous fact is there has not been any new amendment to the original hate crimes bill of 1968 that covers only race, color, religion, and national origin. Bush’s (and the Republican Party) reaction to this bill is not surprising when you realize that this is the same guy who didn’t want to talk about the case of James Bryd, a Black disabled man in Texas who was brutally attacked dragged and beaten to death by a group White non-disabled men. James Bryd's disability was only a footnote in the case. What makes Bush’s reaction to this bill so wacky is his cowboy’s mentality toward the so-called war on terror while he won’t protect us in his own country. We must realize that we are asking a man whose action is killing many every day to support a bill that would affect him, because he too is a hater and has caused so much death in his years in office!
